It is known that you can become a villain , or as a hero. Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. A formidable antagonist. The story follows the comic book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. Taika Waititi’s humorous wit is obvious. Love and Thunder is a movie that is a stand-alone that doesn’t perform to the standard of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade and his films that stand on their own have either been successful or have missed it completely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a terrible entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a great beginning. In the end, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 will be a top choice for everyone’s top five MCU films. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika waititi collaboration meant expectations were extremely high ahead of the release.
Gorr (Bale), the god who wants to eliminate all gods makes an appearance in New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining forces with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) as well as Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who has become Mighty Thor. The plot is simple, unlike the Marvel films of recent times, and the performances are excellent in this film. Hemsworth is the main character, who is experiencing a midlife crisis. However, Bale as well as Portman are outstanding. In a testament to Bale’s talents, the pre-title credit scene is. Gorr could be the new Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a certain eerieness to the character but not much else.
On the other one hand, Portman, who makes her reentry to the Marvel world following her absence from the last two Thor films, plays the cancer-afflicted ex-girlfriend picked by Mjolnir. However, the film builds up a touching backstory for the astrophysicist who can flaunt her biceps many scenes.
Marvel does its own flexing too, through the many cameos in the film. We also see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast which includes Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles in Thor: Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor, respectively. We also have Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play and the director of the play. Waititi, who is now Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his most loved genre. There are some funny ideas, like an emo goat and a noisy one Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory, Thor doing leg-splits, Valkyrie posing as the ambassador of Old Spice…
The main premise is that Thor desires his Mjolnir but is afraid of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. The problem is that these gags though effective, are at the expense of deep emotions, and reveal the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder tackles a range of different kinds of love, from a father/daughter relationship to the complicated love story of lovers who are not together… There’s a parallel between Gorr losing his respect for his god, Rapu, and Thor becoming disillusioned with Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). The ideas are endless, however…
There are many connections to films such as Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as Easter eggs. There’s a photo of the god who died, Falligar, taken straight out of comics. We can see Hemsworth wearing the original Thor costume that comic-book readers recognize. As he fights Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We are also shown a tattoo of “RIP Loki with the helmet of the trickster etched on the back of our Viking. We’re introduced the villainous Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker seem to have the ability to think for themselves and are able to control their own minds, it’s interesting to observe new weapons that be able to control individuals.
The scene we were shown using Shang Chi’s ten ring in Ms. Marvel’s mysterious Bangle as well as the Ebony blade during the Eternals post-credits scene. Following the recent Marvel show, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but never give you power” feels relatable. A bit of Valkyrie’s loss in war to her greatest companion and Korg being a victim of another Kronan man are also included.
We’re reminded of the Ragnarok colour palette during the first half, however the majority of the second half is set in the dark world of black and white. Action scenes that are monochrome are quite enjoyable and should be noted.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role but it’s a relief to MCU fans who’ve seen the original Avengers or sacrifice their lives or hang their heads.
